LSU Health New Orleans’ Zabaleta Awarded Fulbright Foreign Scholarship

The Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board (FFSB) has awarded Jovanny Zabaleta, PhD, Associate Professor in the Department of Interdisciplinary Oncology at LSU Health New Orleans School of Medicine, a Fulbright Award to Colombia in academic year 2022-2023. The Scholarship will build upon Dr. Zabaleta’s collaborations with researchers in Colombia, South America. The award will allow Zabaleta to make three, month-long trips to Colombia over the next two years to mentor students who will be coming to train at LSU Health New Orleans.

Undergraduate, Master’s and PhD students work in Zabaleta’s lab, where they are trained in the latest molecular techniques used in next-generation sequencing through service contracts with LSU Health New Orleans’ Translational Genomics Core. Over the years, Zabaleta has mentored more than 10 Colombian students.

According to the FFSB, “Appointed by the President of the United States, the 12-member Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board was established by Congress to supervise the global Fulbright Program as authorized by the Fulbright-Hays Act of 1961. Representing diverse facets of American society, Board members select students, scholars, teachers, and others from the United States and abroad to participate in Fulbright exchanges.”

In a letter notifying Zabaleta of the award, the chair of the board wrote, “Your grant is a reflection of your leadership and contributions to society.”
